K3D248 The importance of partnerships with parents and families and how these partnerships can be developed and supported.
It is essential that we as practitioners remember that parents are and should be seen as their child’s first teacher, so it is paramount that we work together to have a positive impact on a child’s development and learning.
Having a welcoming ethos within your setting is needed in order to secure partnerships with parents by:
- Recognition of the role that the parents play in their child’s development and education and respecting their role.
- Ensuring all parents feel and have a positive role to play in their child’s education.
- Demonstrating to parents that they can communicate their views, ideas, feelings and opinions to staff and these will be dealt with respectfully, sensitively and seriously.
- Demonstrate that you value cultural and religious backgrounds.
- Having a settling in period at the beginning of the day where parents can share information or any concerns. Also providing time for the children to feel secure and safe.
- Open days for parents can be invaluably giving them a feel of what the school is really like as well as providing information on many matters.
- Parents evenings involving and sharing in their child’s development, achievements and targets.
- Curriculum evenings are held during the year to give parents the opportunity to see how certain subjects are covered, these are interactive and parents are encouraged to participate and ask questions.
- Parents Association is the structure through which parents in our school can work together for the best possible education for their children by advising on policies, issues, suggest or organise extra-curricular activities.
- Social events such as fund raising, trips, parent helpers, assemblies and sports day.
- We introduce parents to each other.
- We provide ongoing written contact such as letters, newsletters, information posters and our school’s website.
- Our teacher’s visit pre-school’s and homes before a child is admitted as a way of developing early relationships with the child and parents.
- We have a Key worker system giving parents a member of staff that they can approach, know and trust.
